About Grove Arcade
In the early 1920s, E.W. Grove set out to create more than just a building - he sought to shape the cultural heartbeat of a city he adored. Captivated by Asheville, he brought to life a grand architectural treasure that he called βthe most elegant building in America,β designed as a retail destination to connect, create, and build community.
Today, the Grove Arcade continues to embody Groveβs vision. Its ornate architecture and rich history are interwoven with an eclectic mix of boutiques, restaurants, and local artisans. More than a landmark, it is a living, breathing experience of Ashevilleβs lifestyle and culture.

Such beautiful architecture in this building. As soon as you walk in, you have the feeling of walking into another world. Great old world class. Cute little shops. We will definitely be visiting again soon.

Really enjoyed the local Asheville vibe and culture at the Arcade. We were only passing through and only had a short period of time to experience something truly Asheville. Glad we opted to visit the Arcade - beautiful architecture, a wonderful diversity of shops and eateries, centrally located in the heart of the city. Also a very walkable area with outdoor vendors and other nearby shops and restaurants. If you only have a brief period of time to visit Asheville, this is a good place to go!

Walking into the Grove Arcade feels like stepping through a time portal - in the best possible way. This Late Gothic Revival landmark has been anchoring downtown Asheville since 1929, conceived by E.W. Grove (the same visionary behind the Grove Park Inn) and designed by architect Charles N. Parker. The ivory terra-cotta exterior, Venetian Gothic arches, grotesque carvings, and spiraling wrought-iron staircases aren't decorative afterthoughts - they're the whole point. The history here is genuinely wild. After thriving as the commercial heart of Western North Carolina through the 1930s, the federal government seized it during World War II - evicting 74 shops and 127 offices with less than a month's notice - and later used it as headquarters for the National Climatic Data Center. It sat largely dormant for decades before a painstaking restoration brought it back to life in 2002. First enclosed mall in America listed on the National Register of Historic Places, for what it's worth. Today it's exactly what it should be - boutiques, galleries, restaurants, and local vendors doing their thing inside one of the most architecturally stunning buildings you'll find anywhere in the South. Such a variety of vendors to visit! From vintage clothes to folk art; spices to baby items; Grove Arcade offers a wide range of options for your shopping needs. Stunning architectural style and luxury apartments on top. Was pleasantly surprised by the spiral staircases, gargoyles and wall decor. Great way to spend the morning after breakfast!
